Irwin's Mini Soda Breads
Rating: 4.5/5
Price: £1.35 for 4 rolls/breads
Found in: Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Ocado
Pros: Good value, good flavour, versatile
Cons: Can be difficult to consistently find in English supermarkets.
You can imagine my excitment when perusing the bread aisle and coming across my first 'yeast free' breaded product. These soda breads are the perfect size to replace your usual bread roll and can be used for a variety of meals. The packet suggests frying them in some butter for a hearty breakfast to making mini pizzas for all the family. I use them for a general bread roll filled with pulled pork or a good burger. They are slightly small compared to a standard bread roll but still good nonetheless.
In terms of flavour and consistency, I personally cannot fault them. I enjoy the flavour and the consistency is not 'claggy'. I will say they are better toasted though.
If you do find them in the supermarket, be sure to stock up on them (they freeze well!) as they can be a little hard to find from one week to the next.
This bakery also makes a brown sliced soda bread which is available in Sainsburys, Waitrose, Morrisons, Ocado and Tesco.
McCambridge Heart White Soda Bread
Rating: 3/5
Price: £10.37 (pack of 6 boxes: £1.73 per box) via Amazon or £2 per box in Ocado
Found in: Amazon and Ocado
Pros: Ready-to-go bread mix! Tasty, good value, lasts a while once made
Cons: Can be messy to make in the provided bag
This was another great little find on Amazon. I was curious to find a ready-to-make or ready made soda bread to compare to some of the home recipes I was experimenting with and this popped up.
It comes in a pack of 6, so you get 6 loaves of bread. The instructions are simple enough: you add the liquid of your choice be it milk, water, buttermilk etc to the bag of bread mix. You mix it together in the bag until completely combined. Then you turn it straight out into the provided aluminium tin (you will need to lightly oil it yourself) then put it into a preheated oven for about 35-40 mins. Once cooked, you remove it from the oven and cover with a towel. Once its cooled, you can eat it!
The flavour is good, I have made this twice now. Once with whole milk and once with buttermilk. I liked both but prefered the buttermilk version as it had a nicer flavour. Both loaves have also lasted a few days too.
The only issue I have had with this is that it can be very messy combining the ingredients in the provided bag and difficult to actually get it out of the bag after it's mixed so I recommend mixing it in a bowl rather than the bag. Other than that, it is a great product if you need bread made quickly without the fuss of weighing out all the ingredients yourself.
This bakery also makes a traditional Irish soda bread, a fruit loaf and gluten free versions too.
Rating: 4/5
Price: £1.90 (pack of 8 cube)
Found in: Most supermarkets
Pros: No added yeast and also zero salt. They come in three different flavours which is handy for different recipes.
Cons: Vegetable one can lack flavour sometimes.
I was very excited to find these little gems in the supermarket. I even contacted Knorr to double-check that there was no yeast in them (there is no intentionally added yeast, but they can't guarantee it's yeast-free due to other products in the factory containing yeast).
They come in packs of 8 cubes. I've used all three of them in different recipes now, and my favourite is probably the chicken cubes, as they have a nice flavour to them that you can taste. The lack of salt allows you to add as much or as little as you want.
I read in my trawling on the internet to try a beef stock cube in place of marmite on toast which I could now try as these don't have yeast. It does kind of work, but you do not need a lot of it, just a little bit sprinkled over some melted butter.
The only issue I found with them is the vegetable flavour doesn't always taste of anything, so it needs extra seasoning (probably something to do with the lack of salt). Also, they are not always readily available in all the supermarkets. I have found some that have only one flavour, some that have them all and some that do not stock them at all. That being said, I did find the vegetable one for 39p in B&M the other day.
